How To Nurture a Relationship Through the Conscious Use of Language

Language is but powerful tool in building a relationship with a child. This applies even more in multilingual settings.

  • language can serve as a bridge between the educator and the child and establishes a connection between the two

  • depending on how conscious the educator is of his language, the more successfully can he use language to build a connection with the child

  • according to the Pikler approach in childcare and education, the educator aims at accompanying the child through language in their time at daycare

  • the language used to accompany the child is an attentive and esteeming way of mirroring the child’s actions, interests or initiatives. The educator and her language follow the child’s lead and comment on what the child is doing, what she can observe or what she is about to do/what will happen to the child soon. This prepares the child for any changes or unforeseen situations and provides a feeling of security and being in control which can be very empowering for the child.

  • Using conscious language to accompany the child is a very respectful, appreciative and considerate way to approach the child and interacting with Momo and allows for the educator and child to form an authentic and deep bond.
