Disagreement with ideologies

Parent-Educator Source, Conflict and Solution

Families may come from cultures where gender roles and other social roles are different to the norms in the country they are living. A boy wearing a dress in a role play area or a girl who wants to grow up to be a footballer may be confronting to parents.

Discuss the importance of children developing different interests and play. Children emulate things they experience in their daily lives from their parents, siblings and peers. Ensure that parents are reassured that this kind of play is normal and is an important part of early childhood development. Never interfere with a child who is playing outside of their supposed gender roles even if a parent requests this. Literature can also be provided as “Food for Thought,” to the parents.
