Ideas to set up a diverse group atmosphere

INTERCULTURAL EXPERIENCES AND HOW THEY CAN LEAD TO PARENT-EDUCATOR PARTNERSHIP CHALLENGES

  • Displays and posters depicting children of all races and cultures interacting.

  • Books showing a wide range of children and families from diverse backgrounds.

  • Puppets, story sacks, puzzles and games, colouring sheets all depicting diverse topics.

  • Home corner and dressing up box can have clothes and themes reflecting different cultures.

  • Having diverse dolls available reflecting all nationalities with appropriate clothing

  • Focusing on the group as a community and then extending outwards to families and other classes in the kindergarten is a good way to create unity and understanding of similarities and differences.

  • Diverse cooking activities including potlucks.

  • Guests can be invited to talk about their home and culture. Parents can be invited as well to come in one at a time and share aspects of their culture or home environments.

  • Emphasize to parents the importance of welcoming new families into the atmosphere.

  • Puppets to present social/emotional issues to the group
